Operations Engineer

The Operations team is responsible for the efficient, reliable and secure function of all Production and corporate IT systems. Operations team members must function in the full spectrum of the enterprise Operations skill set.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily and weekly maintenance tasks on Skytap Production platforms, including:
    • Weekly release and testing
    • Daily monitoring/troubleshooting
    • Generate and track deficiency/bug reports
  • Perform general monitoring, analysis and reporting on Skytap Production platforms, using COTS software, existing internally developed tools and self-created tools
  • Identify and triage bugs in VLab, enter defect tracking tickets and follow-up to resolution
  • Participate as required in the SDLC with Engineering and Product Management

General:

  • Strong general *nix-based operational experience
  • Strong background in developing tools and scripts to support Production environments
  • Background in server virtualization, including hardware and networking
  • Release management and deployment
    • Package building
    • SVN commit/rollback
    • Perform weekly releases and code updates
  • VPN and IPSEC networking
  • Ability to identify, generate and maintain process documentation
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate with other team members and other departments to ensure that Operations is able to provide existing and future capabilities to support company vision and growth

Required background and skills:

  • BS in Computer Science (or equivalent)
  • 4+ years experience in maintaining 99.95%+ uptime Production environments
  • Self-directed, effective communication, great teamwork
  • Able to participate in off-hours on-call rotation and occasional off-hours work

  • VMWare ESX
  • Sun Solaris 10
  • Fedora Core
  • Relational databases (including but not limited to MySQL)
  • Python/Ruby/Apache
  • Shell scripting
  • Microsoft Windows XP/7 and Server 2003/2008 (secondary skill set)
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 (secondary skill set)

Hardware:

  • Blade servers and chassis
  • Core switching
  • Juniper firewalls/routers and JunOS operating system
