Leading South America-based insurance company with over 120 years of industry experience providing customers with life, health, accident, home, travel, retirement and vehicle insurance. It is well-known for its client-oriented approach, employee commitment and social responsibility.

Challenge

Facing industry-wide increased demand for digital services, a leading insurance company sought to accelerate its cloud transformation. Doing so would increase the organization’s agility and resiliency and, most importantly, improve its position in the ever-increasingly competitive insurance marketplace. The company was already working with leading IT infrastructure services provider Kyndryl and had identified Microsoft Azure as its destination cloud given how well positioned Azure was to support its applications across critical lines of business while modernizing its IT infrastructure.

Working in partnership with Microsoft and Azure, the insurance company identified Skytap on Azure as the solution to help it accelerate cloud migration for its Oracle-based IBM Power workloads. The company wanted to move these workloads to the cloud because leaving them on-prem and not including them in its broader cloud transformation efforts meant the company would not be able to fully realize the cost and agility benefits of its cloud migration.  Because its Oracle-based IBM Power workloads were mission-critical, the company sought a low-risk, proven path to Azure and looked to do so with little to no business disruption. With Skytap on Azure, the company could migrate these workloads without incurring the cost to re-write, refactor or re-platform the applications.

Solution

The company selected Skytap on Azure to migrate its business-critical Oracle-based IBM Power workloads to Azure.  Doing so would accelerate its migration path for these core applications with minimal change and risk while allowing them to benefit from the global availability and scalability of Azure. This “lift and shift ” strategy would allow the company to preserve existing IT skill sets and techniques given that Skytap on Azure allows the company to continue its operations in Azure similar to how it does so on-prem. This move also provides the company with a solid foundation for future innovation with value-added Azure native services such as firewalls and Blob storage as these things can be integrated into the overall solution without major re-architecting of the original solution.

Outcomes

The insurance company successfully migrated its Oracle-based IBM Power workloads to Azure, gaining cloud scalability and agility for these critical workloads and applications.  Skytap credits the successful implementation to the close collaboration with the company, Microsoft and Kyndryl. The company now has the opportunity to further derive value from its IBM Power investments by connecting them to value-added Azure native services such as advanced analytics.
